After The Republican Takeover Of Congress In The 1994...

After the Republican takeover of Congress in the 1994 midterms, Newt Gingrich, a Republican from Georgia, assumed the Speakership and with it, the congressional agenda. He took bold action on an array of matters, but when it came to DADT, it quickly became clear that he had to retreat. On April 2, 1995, Gingrich declared that Congress would put back in place a definite ban on gays in the military, but took back his statement only two days later in the wake of political reality. There was a â€Å"conspicuous absence of political support for reopening the contentious issue . . . even among conservative Republicans† (Towell 1036). Once Clinton made the decision to compromise, it satisfied enough people to be kept in place, and there was not†¦show more content†¦By the time Obama assumed the presidency, several states had already legalized same-sex marriage and the Democratic White House looked in good shape – with a newly Democratic Congress – to make the m ilitary policy change that Clinton had originally hoped for (Wolf). The public opinion shift towards pro-LGBT rights swung the momentum towards Obama and the Democrats to be able to define the problem of DADT as one that needed changing. Although President Obama now had the power of problem definition, the path towards repealing DADT was anything but automatic. As Godwin, Ainsworth, and Godwin, explain, â€Å"Most policy issues . . . must compete for a place on the agenda† (Godwin 51). Agenda setting is the next step in the public policy model after problem definition, and the DADT repeal did not make it onto the agenda right away. President Obama took office in early 2009, but did not immediately make a move on homosexual military policy as Clinton did. Obama acknowledged that the process to repeal DADT would have to go through the proper legislative channels, most importantly involving Pentagon officials, before it could come to a congressional vote. He and his allies agree d that the best course of action was to â€Å"wait on definitive recommendations from the military† (Rogin 1694). Analysis Of Common Sense By Thomas Paine - 826 Words

Common Sense by Thomas Paine Analysis Initial Reaction The first sentence of the introduction, â€Å"a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong, gives it a superficial appearance of being right,† (Paine, 1776) is instantly captivating to me by the Paine’s acknowledgement that by not standing up to wrong and injustices when you see or experience it is the same as giving the injustice your seal of approval for the wrongs being done. The very fact that Pain is admittingly not fan of government but goes on to justify its necessity, shows his commitment to doing what he feels is right is fascinating and respectable, especially in the time in which he lived. During this time, his actions would be considered a treasonous act against the monarch†¦show more content†¦Even after these events, some colonists continued to believe that reconciliation was possible with Britain. Other colonists wanted full independence. Paine wrote Common Sense to dissuade those colonists believing in reconciliation and argued for full independen ce from Britain and the establishment of a republican form of government. Biographical Context Paine, born in Britain on January 29, 1737 had some schooling at Thetford Grammar School but was for the most part, self-educated. He was a failure in school, apprenticeship to his father as a stay-maker, and was dismissed as an Excise Officer. During his tenure in a tax-collector’s office he published The Case of Officers of Excise, a publishing for higher pay for tax-collectors, and subsequently fired. (Thomas Paine, n.d.) He was no stranger to publishing writings that were controversial. Paine met Benjamin Franklin and became good friends. That friendship eventually led to him moving to Philadelphia in 1774 where he began focusing on journalism and eventually writing Common Sense. Exploration of themes or stylistic characteristics The Enlightenment Period was marked by skepticism, individualism, utilitarianism, and rationalism. Holiday On Mackinaw Island Analysis Essay Example For Students

Holiday On Mackinaw Island Analysis Essay Audience: Vacation Takers, Recommended for Over 20 Years OldAlthough Mackinaw Island is very small, it is very beautiful and has lots of exciting activities, such as bicycling, horseback riding, buggy riding, and fudge shopping. Mackinaw Island is located in the upper part of Michigan between Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. It makes a perfect place for a quick getaway. The tourist season runs from mid-May to mid-October. The Island, being only 8.2 miles around, looks like a small old-fashioned town. Mackinaw Island is usually packed with people making the main road look narrow. Often fifty bicycles or more are parked on both sides of the road every 300 feet. People are walking in every direction. Horses walk on the right side of the street and horse buggies wait to pick up passengers. The place looks very congested and it doesnt look like an enjoyable vacation spot but a little farther away from the downtown area peace and beauty exists. Mackinaw Island has beautiful scenery. One unique place, the Arch Rock, looks very neat. It towers above the tourists. The rock has a huge round hole carved in it making it resemble like a donut hole. It is about fifteen to twenty feet in diameter. Through the hole, tourists can only see the bicycle path and Lake View. The lake has clear blue water. One of the other attractive places it has is the butterfly house. Hundreds of butterflies fly around the house. When they get tired, they sit on one of the wire fences. They are in every size and color. Some of them look like ladybugs and others look like zebras with black and white stripes. Mackinaw Island has lots of activities to do from riding bicycles to horse carriage tours. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the Island. One of the exciting activities the Island has is the bicycle riding, which is different from other bicycle rides because it is around the shoreline. The bicycle path is seven miles around the shoreline road. The path is very peaceful, unlike the Islands downtown area. Signs on brown boards on the left side of the road describe the next upcoming scenery. Wherever there is scenery to view there is a special parking place for the bicycles. When tourists get tired while riding bicycles they can just pull over on the side and sit along the lake and enjoy the sun and the Lake View. Horseback riding is very exciting and fun. They have different size horses ranging from small to big. The horse owners are very friendly. They help visitors pick out a horse based on your previous experience riding horses. The horses are healthy looking. The horses are well trained; for example they know which path to follow. They walk in a row and only on the right side of the road behind one another. Once the horse reaches designated spot in the forest they start running faster. The green trees make the forest look naturally beautiful. The horses make the ride very exciting by taking the tourists in the forest. Another interesting activity Mackinaw Island has to offer is the horse carriage tour. First the carriage takes the tourists to horse stables where they can observe horses daily activities. Interesting facts about the horses in carriages are that they are raised together, so they get along very well, and work as a team. Then the carriage tour stops at a famous fudge stop name Blacksmith Shop. It stops there for few minutes to fudge shop. The horse buggies also make a stop to see unique houses and beautiful gardens. The houses are well designed and gardens are decorated with many different types of flowers. .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .postImageUrl , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:hover , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:visited , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:active { border:0!important; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:active , .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059 .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud76d3b79ee6013b9c01a64aac7ee0059:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: National Economy EssayMackinaw Island has a wonderful chocolate cooking smell in the air. Just Before The Beginning Of World War II, Albert Einstein Wrote A Let

Just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Urged by Hungarian-born physicists Leo Szilard, Eugene Wingner, and Edward Teller, Einstein told Roosevelt about Nazi German efforts to purify Uranium-235 which might be used to build an atomic bomb. Shortly after that the United States Government began work on the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the code name for the United States effort to develop the atomic bomb before the Germans did. "The first successful experiments in splitting a uranium atom had been carried out in the autumn of 1938 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin"(Groueff 9) just after Einstein wrote his letter. So the race was on. Major General Wilhelm D. Styer called the Manhattan Project "the most important job in the war . . . an all-out effort to build an atomic bomb."(Groueff 5) It turned out to be the biggest development in warfare and science's biggest development this century. The mos t complicated issue to be addressed by the scientists working on the Manhattan Project was "the production of ample amounts of 'enriched' uranium to sustain a chain reaction."(Outlaw 2) At the time, Uranium-235 was hard to extract. Of the Uranium ore mined, only about 1/500 th of it ended up as Uranium metal. Of the Uranium metal, "the fissionable isotope of Uranium (Uranium- 235) is relatively rare, occurring in Uranium at a ratio of 1 to 139."(Szasz 15) Separating the one part Uranium-235 from the 139 parts Uranium-238 proved to be a challenge. "No ordinary chemical extraction could separate the two isotopes. Only mechanical methods could effectively separate U-235 from U-238."(2) Scientists at Columbia University solved this difficult problem. A "massive enrichment laboratory/plant"(Outlaw 2) was built at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. H. C. Urey, his associates, and colleagues at Columbia University designed a system that "worked on the principle of gaseous diffusion."(2) After this proc ess was completed, "Ernest O. Lawrence (inventor of the Cyclotron) at the University of California in Berkeley implemented a process involving magnetic separation of the two isotopes."(2) Finally, a gas centrifuge was used to further separate the Uranium-235 from the Uranium-238. The Uranium-238 is forced to the bottom because it had more mass than the Uranium-235. "In this manner uranium-235 was enriched from its normal 0.7% to weapons grade of more than 90%."(Grolier 5) This Uranium was then transported to "the Los Alamos, N. Mex., laboratory headed by J. Robert Oppenheimer."(Grolier 5) "Oppenheimer was the major force behind the Manhattan Project. He literally ran the show and saw to it that all of the great minds working on this project made their brainstorms work. He oversaw the entire project from its conception to its completion."(Outlaw 3) Once the purified Uranium reached New Mexico, it was made into the components of a gun-type atomic weapon. "Two pieces of U-235, individu ally not large enough to sustain a chain reaction, were brought together rapidly in a gun barrel to form a supercritical mass that exploded instantaneously."(Grolier 5) "It was originally nicknamed 'Thin Man'(after Roosevelt, but later renamed 'Little Boy' (for nobody) when technical changes shortened the proposed gun barrel."(Szasz 25) The scientists were so confident that the gun-type atomic bomb would work "no test was conducted, and it was first employed in military action over Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug. 6, 1945."(Grolier 5) Before the Uranium-235 "Little Boy" bomb had been developed to the "point of seeming assured of success,"(Grolier 5) another bomb was proposed. The Uranium-238 that had been earlier ruled out as an option was being looked at. It could capture a free neutron without fissioning and become Uranium-239. "But the Uranium-239 thus produced is unstable (radioactive) and decays first to neptunium-239 and then to plutonium-239."(Grolier 5) This proved to be useful bec ause the newly created plutonium-239 is fissionable and it can "be separated from uranium by chemical techniques,"(6) which would be far simpler than the physical processes to separate the Uranium-235 from the Uranium-238. Once again the University of Chicago, under Enrico Fermi's direction built the first reactor. "This led to the construction of five large reactors at Hanford, Wash., where U-238 was irradiated with neutrons and transmuted into plutonium."(6) The plutonium was sent to Just Before The Beginning Of World War II, Albert Einstein Wrote A Let Just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. "This led to the construction of five large reactors at Hanford, Wash., where U-238 was irradiated with neutrons and transmuted into plutonium."(6) The plutonium was sent to

Bag of Bones essays

Bag of Bones essays Bag of Bones is the best book Stephen King has written in years. As shocking as Carrie, as mysterious and menacing as The Shining, as funny and honest about writers as Misery, as evocative of place as his record-setting bestseller The Green Mile, this is a horror novel steeped in all the finest qualities of our favorite Stephen King stories. And yet it is also a bold step beyond, toward a more mature vision of marriage, sex, loss, family-and, especially, evil. Narrator Mike Noonan is a best-selling writer of romantic thrillers-"V.C. Andrews with a prick," as he ruefully puts it. Plagued by nightmares and writer's block following the sudden death of his wife, Mike escapes to their lakeside summer house, known as Sara Laughs. But this is King territory, and Mike's beloved Yankee town has its dark side. A century ago, a group of local men murdered a black blues singer and her family. The killers' heirs have paid the price ever since. But this is only one of the buried secrets Mike unearths. The community is held in the grip of Max Devore, a powerful millionaire with a wicked past. Devore is obsessed with taking away his granddaughter, Kyra, from her young widowed mother, Mattie. As Mike falls in love with Mattie and comes to adore Kyra, he has to decode the warnings that only he and the child are receiving-from ghosts. He must do all these things, or the killing won't stop. It would be unfair to reveal any more of King's story, a complex web of relationships, rivalries, and revenge. Refrigerator magnets that spell out warnings and a spooky trip back in time to a country fair are just the beginning of a long and scary ride. By the end, King has given you a larger sense of the interrelatedness of past and present-and of the wages of sin. Bag of Bones, then, is the author at his best, and something more. ...
